UmpG(SurE) is a broad substrate specificity phosphatase in vitro (Proudfoot, 2004). The UmpH(NagD) and UmpG(SurE) phosphatases degrade UMP to uridine in vivo (Reaves, 2013). A surE mutation is a specific suppressor of pcm stationary phase survival defects. The original surE mutant had a secondary rpoS mutation. The lack of survival in stationary phase was due to this cryptic rpoS mutation and clean surE mutants have no survival phenotype.
