E. coli luxS is capable of inducing V. harveyi luminescence. The products of LuxS are homocysteine and the AI-2 precursor 4,5-dihydroxy-2,3-pentadione (DPD). DPD is unstable and reacts with water to form AI-2, a hydroxymethylfuran. LuxS may be involved in the recycling of S-adenosylhomocysteine. LuxS also makes AI-3. LuxS is regulated by cyaR sRNA (De Lay, 2009).
