QueD was mistakenly identified as a 6-pyruvoyl tetrahydrobiopterin (PPH4) synthase (PTPS); the identity of the product was not confirmed (Woo, 2002). QueD synthase converts 7,8-dihydroneopterin triphosphate (H2NTP) to 6-carboxy-5,6,7,8-tetrahydropterin (CPH4) and can also make CPH4 from PPH4 or sepiapterin (McCarty, 2009). The B. subtilis queD ortholog is involved in queuosine preQ0 synthesis (Reader, 2004).
