The previous conclusion that fabH is an essential gene was based on experiments in a spoT1 genetic background; fabH deletion mutants do not survive in a spoT mutant background; fabH deletions grow slowly in a spoT+ background and form small cells (Yao, 2012). fabH was reported to be an essential gene, in conflict with the presence of a deletion in the Keio collection (Lai, 2003).
