YhbJ(RapZ) is an adaptor protein that recruits GlmZ to the catalytic domain of RNase E; GlmY is an anti-adaptor decoy sRNA that binds YhbJ(RapZ) competitively with GlmZ, protecting it from degradation (Göpel, 2013). GlmS synthesis is negatively feedback regulated by glucosamine-6-phosphate, and YhbJ(RapZ) enables degradation the GlmZ sRNA; unprocessed GlmZ upregulates glmS mRNA post-translationally by mediating an RNase E cleavage of the glmS mRNA (Kalamorz, 2007). The GlmY sRNA upregulates glmS post-transcriptionally (Urban, 2007). GlmS can be inactivated by various halomethyl and methyl ketone derivatives, of which bromomethyl ketone derivative is most effective because of its high binding affinity.
