RNA Intergenes Transcriptional Regulation Transcription Initiation

Stand-alone mRNA 5' UTRs are not annotated as sRNAs in EcoGene unless an sRNA-specific function has been demonstrated. Due to the extensive secondary structure of the many 5' UTRs, they may be relatively more stable than the mRNA as a whole and thus may be detected as separate degradation intermediates, or they may represent mRNAs prematurely terminated by attenuation or truncated by ribozyme cleavage. Alternatively, persistent 5' UTRs may have standalone regulatory roles that have not yet been elucidated.
