Murein biosynthesis and degradation

Description:

Murein synthases are periplasmic transpeptidaces and transglycosylases responsible for murein synthesis as part of growth, repair and remodeling of the cell wall. Most of them were first identified as penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs).

Details:

The six murein synthases include the two major murein polymerases MrcA(PBP1A) and MrcB(PBP1B), which are bifunctional murein transglycosylase and transpeptidases. PbpC(PBP1C) and MtgA are monofunctional transglycosylases. MrdA(PBP2)and FtsI(PBP3) are monofunctional transpeptidases.
