Description:

The 3' UTRs of mRNAs are usually predicted by the presence of factor-independent transcriptional terminators located downstream of the last protein-coding gene on an mRNA.

Details:

Although 3' RACE has identified some mRNA 3' ends, many more are expected to be identified from deep sequencing. Some of the ends may be RNAse III cleavage sites or 3' ends digested back to mRNA-stabilizing REP sequence hairpins by exoribonucleases rather than truly signalled RNA polymerase transcription termination endpoints.

A deep sequencing paper mapping 1,774 terminators, thus defining the 3' UTRs, at single base nt resolution (Conway, 2014).
