Protein Translation

Amino acid--tRNA ligases are the charging enzymes that add amino acids to their cognate tRNAs. The aa--tRNA ligase are commonly known as aminoacyl-tRNA synthetases but changed enzyme naming rules have technically thrown out the use of "synthetase", which means a synthase that hydrolyses ATP, as inconsistently applied and unreliable. Accordingly the word "synthetase" has been eliminated from EcoGene protein names, although it remains in common use in publications.
